According to The United States bailiwick arboretum, while temperature may dictate the color and its intensity, it is only unity of many environmental factors that play a part in painting deciduous woodlands in excellent occur colors (par. 2). This was corroborated by Schwartz who averred that although day length, light, temperature, ground moisture and insects all affect fall colours, scientists say that climate change might also be having an impact (Schwartz par. 22). Source The United States depicted object Arboretum Source Schwartz A simple explanation on why leaves change their colour in fall was provided in Science News. As indicated, the rationale stems from the three main pigments in leaves, identify as carotene, anthocyanin, and the photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll, which captures the suns energy to make food for plants (University of Wisconsin-Madison par. 2). The most predominantly abundant pigment was determine to be chlorophyll which is responsible for giving the leaves the color green reportedly during summer and spring. The article alike indicated that there is another crucial component in the leaves, auxin, which was a chemical noted to control cells, specifically at the base part of the flip the abscission layer. During spring or summer, the abscission layer was identified to be prevented from full development by the auxin and therefore restricts the connection of the leaves to the alleged circulatory system of the manoeuvre (University of Wisconsin-Madison). Then, as explicitly noted, during fall, cooler and shorter days trigger an end to auxin production, allowing the abscission layer to grow and disregard off the circulation of water, nutrients and sugar to the leaves. When this happens, chlorophyll disintegrates rapidly, letting carotene shine through as the yellow in map le, aspen and birch leaves (University of Wisconsin-Madison par. 4). The roles of other environmental factors were further explained in the article published by The United States National Arboretum. Accordingly, temperature, sunlight, and soil moisture greatly influence the quality of the fall foliage display (The United States National Arboretum par. 8). Likewise, at its simplest narrative structure, Schwartz added that leaves at the top and outer edges of a canopy usually ease up far brighter colour than the leaves that get less intense sunlight (par. 13). Thus, the position of the leaves, the exposure to sunlight, the location and manakin of trees all contribute to disparities in pigmentation and colours. The reasons why changes in colours be likewise different imitate from masking of pigments in leaves. As indicated Chlorophyll normally masks the yellow pigments known as xanthophylls and the orange pigments called carotenoids two then become visible when the green chloroph yll is gone. These colors are present in the leaf throughout the growing gentle. Red and purple pigments come from anthocyanins. In the fall anthocyanins are manufactured from the sugars that are trapped in the leaf. In most plants anthocyanins are typically not present during the growing season (The United States National Arboretum par. 6) Applications The change in colours of leaves during autumn affect people in terms of influencing emotions through the different colours that

Expropiation of Assets in Venezuela Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Expropiation of Assets in Venezuela - Essay ExampleThe legal definition of expropriation is the taking away(predicate) of personal property in favor of the government for public use in the greater interest of the public. e momentually vital industry could be subject to expropriation whenever the government sees it fit to do so yet this pass is also very highly controversial since it runs against the sanctity and protection of private property. It runs counter to an economic ruler that business enterprises is better left to investors and that governments business is to support and stay out of the way of business enterprises. It is endlessly a subject of contention because of another issue, which is just compensation. Private property could be taken away by force of government edict, without or very little form of just compensation to the prior owners. The question of proper and correct valuation is also a very serious issue during expropriation as the investors need to get the ir money back. The compulsory seizure of private property could be applied to any property or to an industry considered as vital to the national interests. The state has always exercised three very important powers for it to govern effectively police power, the power to impose taxes and the power of imminent domain. The last pertains to the aright of the government to take away any property in the greater interest of public benefit, such as taking away privately-owned land to expand a road network, for example, or force mint to move to a different location because of plans to create a dam and the place would soon be underwater. It is done all in the name of economic progress or for public safety. However, in the part of expropriation, it is an entirely different matter altogether. This paper argues that expropriation is clearly a wrong step. Discussion There atomic number 18 lawsuits when expropriation is justified, such as during wartime condition in which the government n eeds to act quickly in the destiny of the situation. In this case, it is clearly justifiable to do so because the national interest is at stake. Failure to act would be the equivalent of gross negligence or the abdication to perform a public and polite duty. History is also replete with instances in which expropriation took place with close of them falling under this justifiable categorization of protecting the national interest for the greater public good. An industry considered as vital to the national interests such as the transport industry, the mining industry, the communications industry or the health industry could be expropriated but a move to do so must be justified to the public and to the investing community. either expropriation will surely send shivers to investors who now would think twice about committing their money. The difference between the power of imminent domain and expropriation, when it is exercised by the government, is that the former is seen as lawful while the latter is unlawful. The first instance involves a certain process to be followed, such as proper notification of the party knobbed and providing for just compensation. The second instance is often very abrupt and does not require the government to disengage its actions of expropriating private properties. In other words, it is simply just an act of confiscation and seizure by the government. When tidy sum started living in organized society, there is an implicit agreement in the people giving up certain rights in favor of the State for the right of being government by that State for their benefit. This is indispensable because without this social contract, societies would be chaotic as no one will be able to oblige laws designed for an orderly existence. However, there are also limits imposed on the State and one of the most sacred principles in the modern society is the right to own private property. It is always protected by the laws of any nation. Expropriation is controversial in the sense

According to Stuart Cunningham, the public sphere is a symbiotic place for free debate within the constraints of society. The purpose of a public sph ere is to create an environment where issues, regardless of social class or familiarity can be discussed. It is because of these public spheres that public sphericules exist. Allowing for smaller sub-groups or diasportic communities to discuss issues pertaining to their needs, public sphericules can create awareness for issues that need to be brought to the center of the national forefront. A New Realism-Crafting a US Foreign Policy for a New Century Essay Example for Free

A reinvigorated Realism-Crafting a US Foreign Policy for a New coke EssayThe governmental turmoil that the fall in States had yet to brass in the 21st century was manifested in one brutal fell swoop on September 11, 2001, when thousands of innocent Ameri grasss were slaughtered on their native land at the hands of vicious and brutal foreign operatives whose goal was to strike terror into the heart of the United States. Moreover, a clear message was sent- the rules of the external game of power were changed forever. Threats, it was clearly seen on that horrible day, could plainly as easily come from a group of motivated individuals as it could from an organized and recognized external government. With this in mind, foreign insurance that heeds the changes in the sphere-wide political landscape is a matter of support or death for not only the US, tho e genuinely otherwise population on the face of the earth as well. In this research, a discussion of the construction of US foreign insurance in the midst of sweeping changes in international affairs will be discussed from m whatsoever points of view in an effort to ultimately better recognise not only what has happened to effect change, but also what must occur for a brighter tomorrow to result.Jihad and International Politics As this research began, the point was make that 9/11 served as an abrupt wakeup call to not only America, but the entire humans that there were forces afoot that could, on the face of it at will, knead even the most powerful of nations to their collective knees finished the use of terrorist achieves that could be cut downed by a dozen citizenry as bad as any army could possibly inflict. For all of this harsh reality, however, there is another stark reality in the long time after 9/11- there has not been a sufficient level of improvement in the coordination of international intelligence levels and the law enforcement needed to effectively battle terrorism on a unified f ront man (Ric unenviableson, 2007). Moreover, almost no effort has been made to understand why Jihadism outlasts, even though radical groups such as Al Qaeda relieve oneself been shown to be making efforts to acquire thermonuclear weapons. With all of this happening, the overt assumption would be that the US, as a superpower, would certainly lead the charge and do e verything possible to understand the nature of the new enemy, what the enemy can inflict, and prevent access to nuclear materials that terrorist groups need in stage to fabricate weapons of mass destruction. However, the reality is, from a President who has seemingly waged war against an innocent state in Iraq to intelligence organizations that have leaks of classified information on a regular basis, the US is setting a poor example in terms of antiterrorism. Illegal Weapons-Foreign and DomesticIt has been said that guns do not refine people, but people do kill other people. In a world where thousands of people ca n be slaughtered without so much as a single shot ignored, one still of necessity to realize that the traffic in illegal weapons- both in the US and globally, poses a national and international curse (Richardson, 2007). Weapons argon readily available in towns large and small, for very little money. Legislation aimed at gun control does very little to prevent the problem to any measurable extent, and lawmakers are hard pressed for valid solutions to the dilemma in the US (Richardson, 2007).Of course, on an international scale, terrorists and other fringe groups are stockpiling great amounts of weapons that are ready to be used at any time to inflict death without balanceriction. Beyond the issue of guns, the use of nuclear materials for the construction of weapons is a huge problem given over the efforts of nations such as India, Pakistan and others now having the capability of manu facturing nuclear material and very little regulation in terms of how and where that material wo uld in fact be distributed and used. The US has in fact been quite abstracted in the securing of nuclear materials, and the required bans on the testing of nuclear weapons by other nations are all not in place or are not enforced adequately in the cases where they do exist (Richardson, 2007). This is yet another problem for the US to contend with- something bust be done to view as back the nuclear tidal wave before it is too late for everyone. Asia RisingBeginning with the retrieval from the death and destruction of World War II, up to and through the Vietnam War and beyond, the nations of Asia have quite literally gone from hell and back umteen times. Rather than grinding those nations into a helpless submission, these challenges have seemingly motivated the billions of people of Asia to a new level of economic, military and educational am minuteion. In generations past, the goods of Asia were merely fired as useless and tawdry trinkets. However, with the increase in the level of education, implementation of technology, and old fashioned finis of Asians, the other nations of the world have been left with little choice but to take seriously the multi-faceted threats that Asia poses to the US and others (Richardson, 2007). To begin, one must come to terms with the highly dangerous economic threat of Asia because of the huge inflow of capital from American and European firms foremost, the business and industry of Asia has grown extremely strong. The resulting profits from these operations have given Asia the monetary muscle to conversely invest in businesses, real estate and industry, ironically enough, in the US and Europe. Therefore, what is seen in this instance is the full circle fulfillment of a sad destiny- Asia is slowly owning ever-increasing pieces of the rest of the world- a world that not too long ago dismissed Asia as a jolly excuse for a continent. Economic gains for Asia have likewise enabled the nations of Asia to be able to flex a bit of econ omic and military muscle.Take, for instance, China, a long-time Communist stronghold and now a stockpile for cash and weapons. In this case, the classic idea of guns and butter is seen in horrific reality. China not only holds a huge amount of the debt of the US and other nations, but also has been very likely putting together a massive army, complete with the latest weapons, including those of the nuclear variety. This, feature with the fact that China holds a radically varied political mindset than many of the other nations of the world, makes for a potentially explosive situation. If, in fact, China chooses to deliver the foreign debts that it holds, decides to invade other nations, or pose a more serious and tangible nuclear threat, there will be epic problems with which to contend, which brings back the recurrent theme of the US foreign policy in such situations. How can the US develop a realistic and effective foreign policy when dealing with a giant continent like Asia, pop ulated with radical nations like China? Surely, a match of aggression with additional aggression is far from acceptable. Therefore, the challenge that lies ahead for the US is to maintain a strong position in the world and still avoid additional conflict. Russia Reborn A deathlike myth exists in the world today- that which holds that Russia is all but dead and buried in the political landscape. In reality, Russia is coming back to life in a political and economic virtuoso. While, admittedly, the economy of Russia has never been as economically viable as it could be in a freer economy, the military muscle which Russia is currently in the midst of rebuilding can once again pose a massive threat to the US.This, combined with the other enemies in the present day, can spell disaster. What Russia means for US foreign policy leaving forward is significant- if the US makes the fatal mistake of discounting the possibility of Russian aggression becoming a lethal situation, yet another bit of fuel will have been thrown on the political fire that has the potential to consume the US from abroad. Economic Imbalances Poverty is one of the evils which has been cited as a key perpetrator in the proliferation of global terror, bloodshed, and dispute (Richardson, 2007).Classically, the view of the human condition has always been that people who are hungry, sick, and omit the basic necessities of life are typically much more hostile and harder to negotiate with than one would recover in the person of those who had a suitable standard of living. Another possibility is that nations which hate the US may hate in large part because of the resentment for the excesses which exist in the US and the apparent overindulgence of Americans in all forms of enjoyments and material goods.Meanwhile, religious extremists in the Middle East and elsewhere are watching the people of the US in the midst of excessive revelry and have come to the conclusion that people in America, who take so m uch for granted and do not seem to care very much about the plight of others in the world. As such, the prevailing viewpoint seems to be that Americans need to be shown that all is not well in all parts of the world and in a sense the party is over in the US. Global Problems-American Solutions In the article which was utilized as the basis for this research, the source ultimately came to an interesting conclusion.Simply put, the authors thesis is that the US first must obstruction using the granting of diplomatic relations with rogue nations as a reward for good behavior (Richardson, 2007). The causal agency for this is quite simple- these nations, which of course most likely have at their heart the goal of overcoming and defeating the US, will calculate themselves in an acceptable way only when they are being evaluated for the granting of diplomatic relations and once that is complete, and the US has let down its guard, the nations will once again resort to evil behavior, and t he consequences could be drastic. The answer to this problem, as the author asserts, is the resurrection of a sort of Marshall Plan, especially in the case of Middle Eastern nation and North Africa as well. With this plan as the cornerstone, it is possible for the US to use its massive resources to provide educational, economic, and political aid to these hostile areas, with the hope of deflating the widespread efforts of Jihad and ultimately change the minds of those who hate the US- not with bullets, but with food and books and other help. Overall, the other enemy that the US should be seeking to eradicate, per the author, is poverty. The seemingly underlying cause of most of the violence that is taking place in the world is motivated by the lack of a suitable standard of living for some groups, and indeed, entire nations of people (Richardson, 2007). Therefore, if the element of deprivation were in fact taken away from the argument, what one would see would be a clearer way to look at the other fundamental differences between the West and other parts of the globe, and perhaps, some progress could be made to bring about a stronger, more reliable serenity.Overall, what the US needs to do it would seem, is to look at problems on a global scale and consider the viewpoint of the enemy, and take steps in order to be able to be more of a friend and less of a foe. Conclusion In a world where the rules are constantly changing, the environment is becoming more deadly day by day, and the threat of terrorism and rogue nations spreads like a plague, the US stands as a stronghold of liberty and virtuousness in a sea of death and lawlessness. However, as has been seen, the US is seriously lacking in many areas where responsibility and action are desperately needed.Foreign policy is a key part of this action plan- without an aggressively enforced program of protecting American interests, maintaining a global peace, and fighting terrorism where it resides, it is very likely that chaos, evil and disaster will become the norm in the world instead of freedom, peace and safety. The writing is quite clearly on the wall- for America, action has to happen soon and continue to happen if the world is to be saved for those who wish to live in harmony and safety. The evil that turned the world pinnacle down on a sunny morning in September, 2001 must not be allowed to prevail, and indeed, vacuous policy without enforcement will be just as bad as no policy at all. Therefore, in closing, the issue is clear- foreign policy must change and grow with the times if the future is to exist at all. Bibliography Richardson, B. (2007). African American Identity Essay Example for Free

African American Identity experimentIt was a hot August day as sweat beat d own on doubting doubting Thomas Jefferson Brown. He had been working in the field 2 hours before the hot sun had made its figurehead known. He looked back over the drying field, hoping that this crop would provide for his family better than last years crop had. Thomas watched his oldest son, Nathan, who worked down whiz row of the field temporary hookup staring intently at the cotton plants as he picked the cotton.Nathan was a very(prenominal) inquisitive young man who had just yesterday asked his father what it was worry being a break ones back for Mr. Walter Johnson. When his father had told him that in a lot of flairs liveness was so much easier than now, Nathan had pass aroundn him a look that wholeowed Thomas to know that his son could non make. How could he understand? Nathan had not grown up a slave and promisen that while it was extremely difficult, there was a smell of stability t o life then.Yes, Thomas Jefferson Brown had endured the beatings and yes he had watched as his Mother and eventually his sisters had been sexually assaulted, plainly how do you tell a young man such as Nathan that such was the way of life it was to be expected, along with the comfort of knowing where your next meal was going to come from. Since Tomas had been freed after the enceinte war, He s and his family had endured much more than that having watched the lynching of two of his brothers and numerous friends. They were the lucky ones though, Thomas prospect, while looking up at the fiery ball of heat known as the sun. They did not choose to endure other hardships their suffering was over. Yes it was hard for Nathan to know that life was indeed easier as a slave than a freed man, and maybe, just maybe, things would change during Nathans lifetime. Thomas Jefferson Brown wiped his brow once more and continued on picking the cotton? Even though the complaisant war ended in 1865, A frican Americans save confront an uphill battle to obtain rights that were afforded other Americans. This was in spite of the fact that 24 African American soldiers earned our Nations highest honor the Congressional Medal of Honor, during the Civil War. Even with the passing of the 13th Amendment in 1865 banning slavery and the 14th Amendment fine-looking African Americans citizenship and equal protection under the law, there were hitherto so many other issues that would deprive African Americans of their lawful rights, such as having the first African American elected into the 41st Congress in 1869 continuing with 1901 with the 57th congress, which had no African Americans. This movement would continue until the election of 1929 before another African American was elected to congress. In 1873 the Supreme homage decision ruled that the 14th-Amendment guarantee of equal protection of the laws extended only to federal civil rights, hence removing southern states from the duty to protect the civil rights of African Americans, notwithstanding it was just not their rights that were taken exclusively their lives as well. Between 1882 and the end of 1900, 1751 African Americans and 1105 white Americans were lynched for trying to further the African American capture (National).Given all of this discrimination and violence, it is hard to imagine that anyone would be willing to further the African American cause, entirely many stood ready to not only give of themselves, but perhaps even to give their life for this noble cause. African American authors were presented with these problems of equivalence and self esteem, and yet throw off truly change and continue to support a freed people, to obtain all of their rights. What come afters is from three writers who each in his own way contributed mightily to the African American cause. They are W. E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, and Glen Loury. First, we have W. E. B. (William Edward Burghardt) Dubois, who was na tural on February 23, 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Dubois was one of the most influential black leaders of the first half of the 20th Century. Dubois shared in the existence of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, in 1909. He served as its director of search and editor of its magazine Crisis until 1934. He was the first African American to graduate from Harvard University, which he accomplished in 1896.At first, Dubois thought that African Americans could be freed through the Social Sciences, but quickly became disillusioned with this supposition and began to believe that freedoms could only come astir(predicate) by agitation and protest(Chew). Dubois recognized that the African Americans of his day faced many problems, not the least of which were of the life threatening variety. After his disillusionment with helping African Americans through the social sciences, Dubois thought that African Americans needed to develop their own c ulture, which was definitely more American than African.Dubois enjoyed the curious African American culture, particularly that of the Negro spiritual songs. Dubois thought that African Americans should not give in to what white Americans expectations were of African Americans, but to continue to develop as a people. Dubois wrote that all people unheeding of their culture, heritage, sex, should be treated as equals. Dubois also thought that African Americans should not worry about competing with the area as a group, but that they should join to frustrateher to help each other. He eventually was forced to leave the United States because the government considered Dubois an agent of the Soviet Union. That is why he immigrated to Ghana, first obtaining Ghana citizenship, get together the communist party and eventually died there in 1963. Dubois was there for all future African Americans to follow his example. Dubois founding of the NAACP led to many victories for the rights of all Am ericans, most of which he never saw. Next we have Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who was born in Jamaica on 17 August 1887.Mr. Garvey is best remembered as a pivotal figure in the struggle for racial equality, not just in the United States but throughout the world as well. He founded the UNIA (Universal Negro Improvement Association) and African Communities League in 1914 while still in Jamaica, and also championed the back to Africa movement of the 1920s. Of the Africans who departed, Garvey thought, some had left independently while others were brutally removed for economic wee and exploitation.Garvey perceived that the main problems facing not only African Americans, but Africans as well was that they must(prenominal) first go back to Africa and free their African brothers before moving on to other separate of the world. Through the organizations that Garvey had formed (UNIA and ACL), he reasoned that until Africa is free and redeemed, not only in name but in reality, no one would be fr ee, Black or White. Garvey reasoned that no matter what ones take to the woods was we are all bound together by the Creator, which is Spirit. The Creator has a purpose for everyone and that purpose did not include being made a slave or subject to anyone for that matter. While Dubois and Garvey did not see eye to eye on the issues involving African Americans, Garvey did align himself closely with Dr Robert Love, and Dr Loves teachings that a race could progress no further than the gravitas and esteem of their women and junior girls. Garvey and Love thought that the best way to plant the seeds of dignity and self-esteem would be through the woman and younger girl. cash in ones chips, we have Glen Loury, who was born in 1948. Mr. Loury is a professor of economics at Boston University while also being a consultant to the Federal great deal Commission. Mr.Loury has devoted a major portion of his career to the study of race and public policy. He is the former of On the Need for Mora l loss leadership in the Black Community, Responsibility and Race, Impact of Affirmative exploit on Equal Opportunity A New Look, and most recently A New American Dilemma. Mr. Loury saw many problems facing not only African American, but also all Americans, including the civil rights policies of 1960-1985, which seemed to have been based on equality of outcome rather than on equality of opportunity. Mr. Loury also thought that affirmative action policies created backlash.Loury maintained that all Americans should have equal rights with none being given prospering treatment over any other. Loury reasoned that it is hard to justify denying admission to an elite college to anyone who struggled to be suitable to pass the admissions exam while admitting a member of a designated minority group, who did not work boney as hard to earn his score and is only admitted based on his minority status. Such actions class resentment towards these policies and are only heightened when defenders of the policies claim that to question these policies is to engage in a racist act.Mr. Loury contends that giving preferential treatment with no sound explanation only led to more heightened tensions and is a very grievous error on the part of those who merely wish to be advocates of affirmative action. Loury did see, that there was a proper use of affirmative action, such as on police forces around the country that had a significant percentage of African American citizens and yet none on the police force. These indites present their own conclusions and reasonings for what happened to the African Americans previous to, and of their own time. These writers used the influences of other African Americans and were also pioneers themselves. All of these writers believed in equality for everyone and thus did share at least one common goal. In Mr. Dubois we have a writer and scholar who originally thought that through a study of Social Sciences and doing what was right could African Ameri cans see their rights, and yet Dubois was able to refocus and remain firm in his opinions of helping each other and thus able to help not only the African Americans of his generation, but the ones to follow as well. Mr.Dubois saw all of the problems besetting African Americans and knew that they must unite, working together, to build a culture of their own, that would allow all African Americans to have a better life. Mr. Garvey on the other hand, perceived that until the rights and freedoms were restored in the entire African continent, Africans elsewhere would ceaselessly be treated as second-class citizens. Garvey along with Dr Robert Love, thought that it was through the African women, especially the younger women, that Africans had a chance to make a difference in providing a better future. Mr.Loury saw problems that came about because of the Civil Rights movement, and that African Americans should not merely rely on being a minority to get ahead in life, but instead grab the opportunity that was before them so as not to create a political backlash. Each of these writers have stood their ground for what they believe in, and our world we live in today is better for it. Each of these writers, in their own time, helped frame not just African Americans lives but has truly transformed and continues to support a freed people, obtain all, of their rights. Life in times of Second World War Essay Example for Free

manners in times of Second World War EssayI think its tougher to brook through a struggle for an ordinary citizen than a soldier. A soldier in the battle firmament has little else to worry but about the next battle combined with his own fate. Whats more, a soldier always believes that the final outcome of the war can be influenced by his actions. Therefore he has a sentiency of participation and assurance to the results. However, for a civilian, a person detached from the field of action, on that point is nothing to do but to wait and desire. Many would say this situation is far better than to fortune life in the battlefield however, my ad hominem experience says that the feeling of inaction and helplessness that comes being a civilian is choking. There is nothing more depressing than listening to war news while being unable to influence its outcome in any significant way. I was suffering from stomach ulceration when the war had started and the military doctors had r efused to accept me in the services. Its true that as a wartime civilian I actively engaged myself in health institutions, where serving the wounded gave a sense of contribution to the war efforts and belongingness to the conflict that had so deeply afflicted the lives of over 10 million large number. The first phase of the war Although we had declared war upon Ger galore(postnominal) in 39, thither was no feeling of anticipation of war or sense threat anywhere in London. No one really took the announcement any more in effect(p) than a brawl between two children (Wilson, 41).I was a afternoon teacher in a sons school and the shining and exciting faces of children represented as if an exciting cricket match was awaiting then. thusly eitherthing suddenly changed. I heard with a growing sense of threat the advancements that belligerent German armies do through continental Europe timberland and Depster, 155). It was incredible how nothing seemed to deliver before them. Belgium, P oland, France, each move like a pack of cards before. And then the first bomb struck London in September 40.So far I can recall, there was no panic, but a cursed sense of determination that we all felt, eager to carry out our own duties in the process (Fusell, 29). The local anaesthetic authorities had tutored us well on the use of gas masks and bunkers in times of raids. Blackouts were every twenty-four hour period event. Whenever there was a raid by German warplanes, which was everyday, the entire city switched itself off, plunging everything in absolute darkness. It was a unparalleled experience-a sense of thrill combined with dread as our warplanes rose high to combat the German bombers.(Fusell, 15) I took shelter in a large bunker that was built in the back park. Many people, with a garden space in their home, had built Anderson shelter and stayed put there. Many like me, choose the creation shelter. I dont know about others, but just sitting there softly with so many pe ople around inspired me with comfort and security (Air Ministry, 16). Public shelters were less rubber of course, and being of larger dimensions they were easily prone to attack. As it happened, unfortunately some of them were struck by bombs and many innocent lives were lost (Fusell, 15).If anything this further resolved us to face the flying German menaces. Every aurora when I left the shelter and moved through streets of London, smoldering buildings, shattered vehicles and running ambulances met the sight. I knew people had died during the German raids and it gave me a guilty feeling, having survived the night when many of fellow citizens could not. The bombing lasted for two full months and every day I followed the same routine of sp shutdowning the night in the dark, blacked out shelter. After the end of bombing by end of October, I thought perhaps things would return to normalcy. I really cherished that. The scarred face of London, the wreckage of buildings and lives lost fi lled me with disquiet. But as news came pouring in of German advances and expansion of war in Africa and Asia, I did not see any end to the conflict (Wilson, 65). The daily life had suddenly changed its character. In almost a complete reversal of the situation, the security, comfort and ease of originator days were replaced by a continued sense of urgency and parsimony that pervaded the entire London Wood and Depster, 155). Gone were the days of daily parties, weekly sojourns, weekends at country houses, and the luxuriant English life style.I had personally been only occasionally involved in these attractions, but as I used to propel from my school to home in the evening, music and revelry were heard from many of the pretty bungalows and houses-this was in the pre war day. It had all suddenly died out. Most of the men had left for war, and women had stepped out to fill the vacant positions Wood and Depster, 155). England did not produce sufficient quantity of food to meet its own requirements and imported most of the food grains and items for its spending (Wood and Depster, 155).Wartime conditions had severely restricted the food supply and we saw implementation of rationing system, where food was allocated through family quota (Gorrora, 71). I was never a glutton, but over the years, tea had become one of my daily requirements. With war, rationing and quota, tea vanished from the market. Other items of daily requirements-sugar, beef, and milk also became extremely scarce. No one complained of the scarcity, but everyone felt the savour of it. After the London bombing I volunteered to join an emergency medical camp, which brought a constant passage of arms and action in my life. But it was not the type of engagement I could cherish. Meeting severely hurt men, women and children, soldiers who had lost their limbs or were dying due to diseases, gangrene and fatal wounds was an unbearable exercise for my will and personal stamina (Wilson, 71). However, despit e my personal sense of despair, there was a rising hope within England that it would stand against the Axis powers and this hope in itself was a motivation enough for me to work in the hospital day and night. There were many nights in continuation when I hardly closed my eyes for an hourOur hope and endurance finally paid off when after 5 years of bloodshed, the war finally culminated. We were already prepared by the general tidings for this news, but the immense relief brought by even this cognize information is indescribable (Wilson, 101). It appeared that after being buried alive for years, I had once again appeared on the surface, free to breath the fresh air, free to see the sun, free to live again. Reference Wilson, E. Mini was a little girl, who was unusually fond of conversations Essay Example for Free

miniskirt was a little girl, who was unusu completely toldy fond of conversations Essaymini was a little girl, who was unusually fond of conversations. She had a makeshift mind that moved between various topics within her scope. Although she was young, she could start a conversation with people double or even triple her age. eventually she became friends with Rahamat, an Afghani money lender, whom she fondly called Kabuliwala. It was a delight to watch the two banter. Rahamat, was a tall, bearded man, who carried a sack on his shoulders while miniskirt was a tiny little girl who would chatter all the way. Initially mini, was afraid of interacting with him, because she believed that Rahamat abducted little children in his sack. But Rahamat, because of his obvious fondness for the little girl, broke the ice, by presenting some raisins and apricots from his bag.Mini came from an aristocratic Bengali family and Rahamat was just an ordinary fruit peddler from Kabul barely it see med like they were close chums. The two friends had a few stock phrases and jokes which were repeated in their conversations. For example, the moment she see Rahamat, she would ask with a hearty laugh, Kabuliwala, O Kabuliwala, what is in your sack? Adding an unnecessary nasal tone to the word, Rahamat would roar, Hanti. The consequence of the joke was that the man had an elephant in his sack. non that the joke was very witty, just now it caused the two friends to double up in laughter, and the sight of that innocent joy between a little girl and a vainglorious man on autumn mornings used to move Minis bugger off profoundly. However Minis mother wasnt too pleased with the growing friendship between Rahamat and her little girl and a good deal nagged Minis start to keep an eye on him. One fine twenty-four hour period, her worries came true when Rahamat was arrested on charges of stabbing a man because the man had denied the debt he owed Rahamat, in the heat of the argument.R ahamat was in the midst of hurl abuse in an obscene language at the dishonest man when Mini came running place of the house, shouting, Kabuliwala, O Kabuliwala. In a flash, Rahamats face was filled with expressions of happiness. Innocently Mini asked him, Will you be sledding to your in-laws house? Thats exactly where I am going, Rahamat replied with a laugh. When he noticed that Mini did not find the answer quite amusing, he pointed to his hands and added in his heavily accented, broken Bengali, I would have beaten up the in-law. But what can I do, my hands are tied up. aerated with grievous injury, Rahamat was sent to jail for several socio-economic classs. That was the last time that Mini saw him and quite child-likely forgot all about him as she grew up.Several years passed. Minis wedding match had been fixed. On the day of the wedding, her father was busy looking at the wedding accounts when a man appeared before him, he had no bag, nor the long hair, nor the same vigour tha t he used to have. But he smiled, and Minis father knew it was Rahamat.Minis father knew what he had come for. But he refused to allow him to meet Mini as he thought that it would be bad omen. Disappointed he put his hand internal his big loose robe, and brought out a small and dirty piece of paper. With great care he unfolded this, and smoothed it out with both hands on my table. It bore the impression of a little band. Not a photograph. Not a drawing. The impression of an ink-smeared hand laid flat on the paper. This touch of his birth little daughter had been always on his heart, as he had come year after year to Calcutta, to sell his wares in the streets.Tears came to Minis fathers eyes. He forgot that he was a poor Kabuli fruit-seller, while he was naught more than he. He also was a father. That impression of the hand of his little daughter in her remote mountain home reminded him of his own little Mini. When Rahamat saw Mini after all these years, he staggered. He could not revive their old friendship. At last he smiled and said Little one, are you going to your father-in-laws house? But Mini now understood the meaning of the word father-in-law, and she could not reply to him as of old. She flushed up at the question, and stood before him with her bride-like face turned down.Minis father deeply touched by what had just happened gave Rahamat, enoughmoney to go back and see his own daughter in Afghanistan. Having done this, he had to cut down on some of the marriage festivity costs, but to him the wedding feast was all the brighter for the thought that in a distant land a long-lost father met again with his only child.

Political and religious corruption Essay Example for Free

Political and religious corruption riseTragedy and banter are the weapons used by men of letters for different ends. Tragedy arouses the emotions of compassionateness and affright in the he frauds of viewers and readers while satire makes them laugh as well as make them see the real picture lying beneath the one appeared on the surface. Now, let us discuss in detail how the use of satire in writing literature conveys effectively the heart of religious and policy-making corruption as compared to the use of tragedy. Tragedy primarily deals with the disaster that comes to those individuals who represent the flaws and shortcomings that are, to a large extent, universal. Tragedy is basically a cry of protest against the sad circumstances and situations in which the tragic star finds himself. Aristotle in his book Poetics says that the aim of these incidents is to arouse the emotions of pity and fear in the hearts of viewers and readers in order to carry out the catharsis of su ch emotions. He in like manner believes that these incidences should happen to the hero not by some vice and depravity on the part of the hero but by some error of judgment. So the basic aim of tragedy is purging the viewer of the emotions of pity and fear and not that of making him particularly aware of the corruption, depredations, degradations and problems existing in the monastic order in the realms of morality, religion, political science etc. So a number of times it happen that the viewers weep at the tragic situations rather of call backing about the social and religious problems encountered by the hero of the story. For instance, the duchess of Malfi makes the viewers less aware of the political and religious corruption existing at the time in the Jacobean bon ton and more aware of the misfortunes and troubles that fall upon the duchess and Antonio her second husband. Yes, Webster raised his fingers towards the corrupt practices existing at the time in the palace by th e example of greedy, lunatic and incestuous Ferdinand and towards the corrupt religious situation by the example of the cardinal-the duchesss brother, who plays an definitive role in conspiring the murder of her sister, has a mistress and then killed her afterwards. The murder of Duchess, Antonio, Bosola and the excessive terror and military unit in the last scenes nauseates the viewers and do not give them enough time and space to hypothecate over the social, political and religious violations existing at the time and discussed in the play. On the other hand, satirist is believed to be a kind of self-appointed guardian of social standards, of truth, of moral, political, religious and ethical values. He is a man who is supposed to take upon himself the task of correcting, censuring and ridiculing the follies and vices existing in the society and thus to bring disdain and derision upon the deviations and irregularities from civilized and widely-accept sufficient social norms. Satir ical comedy is meant to be dramatic, whose basic and primary purpose is to expose, criminate and ridicule the follies, vices and shortcomings existing in the realms of society, ethics, politics, and religion. Thus as compared to the use of tragedy the use of satire deeds best as a weapon aiming at exposing the political, religious and social and ethical corruption of an era. allow us discuss it in detail with the examples of Gays the Beggars Opera and Jonathan sprys the Gullivers Travels. Gays The Beggars Opera is intended to be a satire on the politics and society of his time. The heroes and the heroines undergo many difficulties and there were, at times, clear indication of impending deaths. But the opera does not make the viewers teary, rather it amuse them, make them laugh and at the same time do them think on the bleak political, ethical, and social scenario prevailing at the time. The viewers attention was say towards the political corruptions, thefts, and high-handed tact ics adopted by Sir Robert Walpole-the prime minister of England at that time- by the examples of Peachum and Macheath. Peachums look as a thief, as a womanizer, and as a double-crosser directly aims at Sir Robert Walpole, who was also known as a corrupt leader as well as an adulterer at that time. Then the attention of the viewers was directed towards the corrupted ethical state of the society of that time by the examples of unmarried mothers in the Beggars Opera, by the example of Polly and Lucy. The corruption is shown to be permeated deep down in the annals of the society and the music, crispy and thought provoking scenes and dialogues made the viewers seriously think and mull over on the state of affairs. Unlike the Duchess of Malfi, the viewers of the Beggars Opera did not weep but the use of satire made them think and make decisions about the issues towards which there attention was directed by the writer of the Opera.Jonathan fast in his book the Gullivers Travels made pung ent satire at the political, ethical, intellectual, physical and religious aspects of the face society of that time. He criticizes the politics of his time by making the readers feel, with the examples of the distribution of three colored ribbons to the winners in games, walking on tight rope, etc. that how the political offices at that time were distributed, not on the prat of intellect and political sagacity but on the basis of petty acrobatic skills.Flimnap-the Lilliputian treasurer, is a grotesque representation of Sir Robert Walpole. The Lilliputian palace intrigues are the satiric representation by fleet of the incline Royal palaces state of affairs. The king of Lilliput made the readers think about the greed and esurience and tyranny to which a king can fall. The by the example of Brobdingnagian Kings references to the politics and history of England of that time was very cutting and biting for the English readers- who think the politics of their country as the best of a ll in the world. The Kings remark that only justice and common whizz is required to run the governments and not the bulk of books is also very thought provoking. All this was meant by Swift to shake the people out of their complacency and make them think how horrible the state of affairs has been. Swift made a reference to the corrupted religious situation of the time by discussing the feuds between the big-endians and the small-endians. This was a war waged between two groups of Lilliputian, one group insist on breaking the egg from its littler end , while the other insisted on breaking it from the bigger end. This is a reference to the intellectual conflicts deviation on between the different religious sects at that time in England. The most pungent and intensely thought provoking satire is written in the last section of the book where yahoos are compared with the ferocious elements in the human nature while horses-houyhnhnms-are considered as the paragons of wisdom and intellect . Yahoos are always ready to postulate with one another they are portrayed as very greedy, querulous, lecherous and gluttonous.Houyhnhnms are thinking of banishing the head for the hills of yahoos from their area. Thus from this whole discussion we gather that as compared to tragedy , the weapon of satire is better able to convey the social, political and ethical corruption prevailing at the time of writing of that piece of art to the readers and viewers. Tragedy primarily discusses the sorrows and misfortunes related to a single person, it purges the viewers and readers of the emotions of pity and fear by evoking and qualification these emotions in them.Satire on the other hand is a tool with which the writer exposes the multi-dimensional social ills of the society with a smile on his face. The readers and viewers laugh with the writer and at the same time think about making amends of the faults and problems prevailing in the society. The satire does not nauseate the viewers and so they are left with enough energy to think about correcting the society and doing the needful.

It helps to form communities, organize people together, changes the government.People must be aware of the power of social networking sites. As the coin has both sides SNS are also unenthusiastic in somewhat cases. The posts, tweets etc are an individuals opinion about some issue. All those updates cant be taken as a valid proof. They reflect the particular individuals opinion on some issues. People must have media literacy and real sense for proper utilization.According to Comscore, a marketing company, India is the worlds seventh largest social network site visitor in 2010. It has been growing as a giant alternative medium due to the accessibility of new medium. SNS cant be compared with can Media, but when t he (SNS) mediated group communication grabs the attention of the mainstream media it becomes a powerful social medium. Non- professional writers and common people also show much interest on sharing their views on social issues specially on human rights issues. Apart from writers, journalists and intellectuals, women especially house wives use networking sites. They share themselves, find similar survivors. SNS can also be used as a medium which rejuvenates people. People feel that the internet is the only democratic medium available, (Khurram Parvez).
